Welcome to the Secular Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Church Family
We are a Secular Institute of consecrated women, deeply integrated into the modern world. Bound by the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience, we strive to be a bridge between the Church and contemporary society, transforming it from within.
The Charism of Secular Sisters of Mary Mother of the Church.
The charism of the Secular Sisters of Mary Mother of the Church centers on living a consecrated life in the ordinary world, transforming society from within by reflecting Mary's maternal care and spiritual motherhood.
I. Core Identity and Secular Consecration:
The Secular Sisters of Mary Mother of the Church are called to a life of total consecration to God while remaining fully immersed in the secular world. Following the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience, the members do not separate themselves from society. Instead, they live and work in ordinary professional, social, and civic environments. They serve as a hidden leaven, seeking to sanctify the world from within and to order all temporal affairs according to the Gospel.
2 Marian Spirit and Spiritual Motherhood
The spiritual foundation of the community is deeply rooted in the person of Mary, specifically under her title as "Mother of the Church" (Mater Ecclesiae). Members look to Mary as the perfect model of discipleship, hidden fidelity, and openness to the Holy Spirit.
By imitating Mary's Fiat, the Sisters exercise a profound spiritual motherhood. They are called to nurture, protect, and support the life of grace in others, especially within the local parish and the wider ecclesial community. Just as Mary accompanied the early disciples in the Upper Room, the Sisters accompany the people of God through prayer, presence, and silent sacrifice.
3 Ecclesial Service and Communion
The charism is defined by an intense love for and loyalty to the Church. The Sisters place themselves at the service of the hierarchy and the local bishop, filling the gaps in pastoral needs wherever their professional skills and secular presence allow.
Their mission is to build bridges of communion in a fragmented world. They manifest the maternal face of the Church by reaching out to the marginalized, supporting families, strengthening parish life, and bringing Christ into secular spaces where traditional religious cannot easily enter.
4 The Path of Interiority and Hiddenness
The effectiveness of the Sisters' apostolate relies entirely on a deep, contemplative interior life. Centered on the Eucharist and sustained by daily prayer, the Liturgy of the Hours, and Marian devotion, they maintain a continuous interior dialogue with God amidst the noise of the world. Their witness is primarily one of hiddenness—not seeking public recognition, but content to love and serve in the ordinary realities of daily life, making Christ present through their professional excellence and joyful charity.
APOSTOLATE OF SSMMC
The apostolate of the Secular Sisters of Mary Mother of the Church is a "presence-based" ministry. It focuses on transforming society from within by injecting the Gospel into daily professional life, parish structures, and family settings.
I The Professional Apostolate (The Primary Field)
The primary mission field for the Secular Sisters is the workplace and the public square. Rather than operating institutional ministries (like community-owned schools or hospitals), the Sisters work in ordinary civil professions.
- Professional Witness: Sisters strive for excellence, integrity, and justice in their careers, serving as ethical leaders.
- Consecration of Labor: By offering their daily work to God, they elevate human labor and sanctify secular structures (e.g., healthcare, education, law, business, and public service) from the inside out.
- Ministry of Presence: They reach people who may never step inside a church, bringing Christ’s love to coworkers and clients through authentic friendship and joyful service.
-
II. The Marian Apostolate of Spiritual Motherhood
-
In imitation of Mary, Mother of the Church, the Sisters exercise a hidden but powerful spiritual motherhood that seeks to give life to grace in others.
-
Accompanying Families: Protecting and strengthening the domestic church by supporting married couples, parents, and single individuals in their daily struggles.
- Healing Presence: Offering a listening ear, spiritual counseling, and maternal comfort to the lonely, the brokenhearted, and the marginalized in society.
-
- Intercessory Prayer: Sustaining the missionary work of the entire Church through hidden prayer, daily Eucharist, and suffering offered up for the salvation of souls.
III. The Ecclesial Apostolate (Service to the Local Church)
The Sisters are deeply embedded in the life of the local diocese and parish, acting as a vital link between the hierarchy and the secular world.
- Collaborating with Pastors: Assisting bishops and parish priests by stepping into pastoral, catechetical, and administrative gaps where secular expertise is needed.
- Faith Formation: Teaching religious education, preparing souls for the sacraments, and guiding lay movements to help form an active, mature laity.
-
- Promoting Communion: Fostering unity and reconciliation within parish communities, actively fighting against gossip and division, and building bridges between different parish groups.
IV. The Apostolate of Hiddenness and Leaven
The specific character of this secular apostolate is marked by discretion and humility.
- Silent Witness: The Sisters do not always wear outward religious habits or demand public recognition. Their impact is like leaven in dough—hidden from view but essential for the transformation of the whole.
- Everyday Evangelization: Evangelization happens organically through normal, everyday conversations, neighboring, civic engagement, and ordinary social interactions.
MISSION OF SSMMC
The mission of the Secular Sisters of Mary Mother of the Church is to extend the maternal love of Mary into the heart of the secular world, sanctifying temporal realities through professional excellence, hidden witness, and active service to the local Church.
Imitating Mary, Mother of the Church, our mission is to be a joyful, transforming presence in the world. As consecrated secular women, we enter into every sphere of human society to cultivate the life of Christ in others. We live our consecration not by withdrawing from the world, but by embracing its daily realities, offering a silent witness of holiness, and building up the body of Christ from within.
Core Pillars of the Mission
- Sanctifying the Secular Square: To bring the values of the Gospel into workplaces, schools, political arenas, and cultural spaces through professional competence and ethical leadership.

- Serving the Local Church: To support parishes, dioceses, and pastors by filling pastoral gaps and animating the faith of the laity.
- Building Bridges of Communion: To foster unity, healing, and dialogue in divided communities, making the maternal face of the Church visible to all

Our story
The Story of the Secular Sisters of Mary Mother of the Church
I. The Spark of Inspiration
The story of the Secular Sisters of Mary Mother of the Church began in 2018 with a profound providential realization: the modern world desperately needs the light of Christ, yet many spaces in society remain completely separated from traditional religious influence. Inspired by the Holy Spirit and the Church's vision for secular consecration, our foundress, Mother Maria Nneka Ibeh, recognized a distinct and urgent calling.
Mother Maria Nneka Ibeh envisioned a community of women who would not leave the world behind to enter a cloistered convent. Instead, they would enter deeper into the world, bringing total consecration into everyday offices, schools, neighborhoods, and marketplaces. Under her guidance, the community chose as their mother and model Mary, under her beautiful title Mother of the Church (Mater Ecclesiae), mirroring her hidden, faithful, and nurturing presence among the early disciples.
The Early Foundation and Identity
In 2018, the first members joined Mother Maria Nneka Ibeh in pioneering this life of secular consecration. They took vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience while retaining their ordinary secular professions. To blend naturally into the secular workforce, they did not wear a daily religious habit, choosing instead to work as teachers, healthcare professionals, and civil servants. They became like leaven in dough—hidden from the public eye, but actively transforming their workplaces from within through professional integrity and joyful charity.
To sustain this intense mission, Mother Maria Nneka Ibeh emphasized a strict rhythm of interior life. The Sisters anchored their days in the daily Eucharist, the Liturgy of the Hours, and a deep devotion to the Blessed Mother.
III. Growth, Unity, and the Annual Gathering
As the Holy Spirit drew more vocations to the vision of Mother Maria Nneka Ibeh, the community faced a new challenge: how to maintain deep sisterly communion while members lived and worked independently across different regions. The solution became a cornerstone of their communal life: the Annual General Gathering.
Once a year, all members leave their secular environments to reunite in a chosen community location. This sacred time is essential for the institute. During this gathering, the Sisters pray together, share the joys and struggles of their hidden apostolates, receive ongoing formation, and collectively renew their vows. It is a powerful moment where they experience the fullness of community life, recharging their spiritual lamps before returning to their individual mission fields.
IV. The Habit as a Sacred Witness
Over time, the community beautifully balanced its secular nature with its religious identity regarding the religious habit. While the Sisters remain hidden in the everyday workforce, they maintain a deep reverence for their visible identity as consecrated women.
Following the tradition established by our foundress, the Sisters wear their religious habit for all official religious matters, liturgical celebrations, and major ecclesial events. Furthermore, out of love for their consecration, members retain the freedom to wear the habit whenever they wish, serving as a powerful, joyful sign of God’s presence in a world that often forgets Him.
V. Looking to the Future
Since its humble beginnings in 2018 under Mother Maria Nneka Ibeh, the Secular Sisters of Mary Mother of the Church continue to grow as a vital bridge between the hierarchy and the modern world. Standing at the foot of the cross and working in the heart of the secular square, they continue to extend Mary's spiritual motherhood—nurturing the life of grace in souls, supporting local pastors, and quietly transforming society for the glory of God.
From modest beginnings, we've grown through unwavering dedication and a commitment to continuous improvement. Each step has reinforced our core belief in the power of collaboration and the importance of integrity. We're passionate about what we do, and we're excited to share our story with you.
The dedication of the Secular Sisters to their faith and their communities is truly inspiring. They exemplify how one can live a consecrated life while being fully engaged with the world.
– A grateful community member
